Ideas to Celebrate Grandparents Day 2018

Going to Grandma’s
Yessss!!

History

Grandparents Day is celebrated the first Sunday after Labor day in September.  This special has been set aside to honor our aging grandparents.  Founded in 1970 by Marian McQuade as a way to honor and celebrate the lonely elderly in nursing home.  In addition, Marian wanted to encourage grandchildren to inherit the wisdom and heritage from their own grandparents.  In 1978, President Jimmy Carter declared Grandparents Day a national holiday.

A few ideas that we have experienced as a grandparents listed below:

In Preschool our grandkids created a special handmade gift and/or special lunch invitation for grandparents.  There is usually a photo booth for pictures afterwards.

In Elementary school, our grandkid’s school would host a breakfast with a special invite for Grandparents.  Afterwards, grandparents are invited to their classroom for a quick observation.

In middle school, or grandkid’s school would host a special assembly and lunch.  Students will invite grandparents to a special program or event in their honor.  The students will have special presentations for their grandparents.

As a former Family Childcare business owner and Childcare center Director I have enjoyed hosting many special grandparent events.  I also ensured that each teachers allowed students to prepare a special gift for their grandparents. My Family Childcare students would assist in the preparation of the lunch.  The students would take a field trip to one of the local grocery stores and assist in picking out fresh fruit and vegetables for our luncheon. The children enjoyed rolling the dough, using their chosen cookie cutter, watching them bake in the oven and eating them with their grandparents. The kids also enjoyed explaining to their grandparents how they made these special cookies.

Grandparents are so often overlooked in our busy lives, but they are so important to the growth and development of the next generation. This is a great enhancement to your curricula on an annual basis.  This helps remind our parents as well about this important day.   Early childhood educators, parents and teachers please to be prepared for this special day for grandparents.

Please share your favorite grandparents day activities or how you recognize your grandparents.
